President’s Message

Welcome to 2018!

This is Alison Cohen, and I am the new President of your ASPPA ABC of Atlanta.  It is a daunting responsibility to take over the reigns from Evan Melcher, our past President, who did a wonderful job expanding our outreach and diversity of programming.  I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful group of professional, knowledgeable, and caring individuals.  I often say that professionals that work in the pension world are some of the most generous and service-oriented individuals anyone will ever come across.

In the past two years, we have diligently tried to listen to the needs of all of our members and create programming that you requested.  As a result, our 2017 events were incredibly well attended and we are excited about increasing the number of attendees in 2018.

In case you missed it, here are a few highlights from last year:

  • Scholarships – We were very proud to offer up three scholarships for the DC-1 exam.  These lucky students, Emily Kopp, David Bleiler and Tianna Barrett, were given the book, exam fee, and attendance at our two-day DC-1 class in November.
  • DC-1 Webinar – Speaking of the DC-1 class, Ilene Ferenczy and I very much enjoyed teaching an eager room – AND virtual audience.  This was our first live online program and things went very well.  So well, in fact, that in 2018 the ABC will be conducting the DC-2 two-day class.
  • Continuing Education – The ABC appointed a new CE Chair and as a result, we have been able to provide CE slides for easier reporting and also added the ability to earn CE credits for NIPA, as well.

We kicked off 2018 with a three-session series on the Retirement Plan Fundamentals and are looking forward to having Robert Richter, J.D. from FIS join us on February 15, 2018, to review “Compensation” and the many nuances related to the topic. We are finalizing the plans for the other sessions to take place later this year, and will be announcing these in the coming weeks…so check back often!

With the start of the new calendar year, it is also time to renew your memberships with ASPPA and your ABC, if you haven’t already done so.

Your membership in ASPPA provides a host of benefits.  ASPPA credentialing places members at the top of the retirement plan industry.  ASPPA members stay ahead of their peers with access to unmatched levels of education, information, networking, and advocacy.  ASPPA members enjoy immediate access to vital information on issues and changes in the industry through The ASPPA Plan Consultant Magazine and the ASPPA ASAP email bulletinsIn addition, ASPPA takes a leading role in obtaining legislative and regulatory changes to simplify the rules governing retirement plans and to promote the retirement plan industry.  In today’s ever-changing legislative environment, your voice is important.  To join ASPPA, please visit the ASPPA website at

Your membership in the local ABC is also very important.  Your commitment to the ABC allows us to provide quality, cost-effective, local education for you.  In addition, your participation in the ABC allows you to network with other retirement plan professionals in the area and share ideas and solutions.  Once again we appreciate your past involvement with the Atlanta ABC and we look forward to seeing everyone again in the upcoming months.  If anyone is interested in becoming more involved with ABC please contact one of the board members directly and we will try and find an opportunity to get you involved. We also encourage our membership to recruit anyone they think would benefit from attending a workshop whether it be a client or other colleagues in the industry.  To become a member of the ABC, visit the ABC website at to join online!

Looking forward to a successful 2018 and to seeing you at an upcoming event!

Many Thanks,

Alison J. Cohen, President
